What Is Breastfeeding?

Standard

What is breastfeeding?

( . )( . )

It’s babies and mummies, nursies and nummies

Holding and rocking and baby talking.

It’s supply and demand and tiny hands.

Eating, drinking and sitting thinking.

It’s a bond that’s strong, secure, life-long.

 It’s babe’s perfect meal…the real deal.

There to share,  it’s beyond compare.

It’s boobs that leak and nursing top chic.

Squishy embraces and milk-drunk faces.

Breath so sweet and playing with feet.

It’s stressing and guessing and hand expressing,

Tummy squeezing, pumping and freezing.

Delicious and free, it’s cold cups of tea.

It’s what babies desire, it doesn’t expire.

Never hot nor cold, beats anything sold.

It’s mustard poos and permanent up-dos.

Pyjamas, spit-ups, burps and hiccups.

Perfecting latches and tell-tale wet patches.

It’s gazing into eyes, lows and highs.

Peaceful vibes and switching sides

It’s cluster feeds and twiddle beads.

A learning curve and holding your nerve.

It’s comfort, cuddles and sleepy snuggles.

The oldest home cure, sweet and pure.

It’s feeding all hours and wishing for showers.

It’s hitting your stride and filling with pride.

Boobies, bubbies, it’s the warm and fuzzies.

Protection, perfection, two-way affection.

It’s your tribe, troop, your support group.

It’s the love that flows, sprays and grows.

It’s booboos, babaas, num nums and ning

Right now it’s our everything.gtesslll copy

Magic Milk.

Magic Milk.

My milk must be magic, It has a few tricks.

Makes tears disappear and for more I just switch.

My milk must be delicious, both the left and the right.

Baby Mmmms and she Aaaahs, smacks her lips with delight.

My milk must be strong, with it’s own knock-out punch.

She can’t keep her eyes open when she’s had a big ‘lunch’.

My milk must have powers, and a mind of its own,

It comes when baby’s hungry, even when I’m not home!

My milk must be addictive, judging by the response,

When she wants it, she needs it and she needs it at ONCE.

My milk must have secrets, cos we don’t fully know,

How it heals and soothes  her and makes her skin glow.

My milk must be amazing, for us it’s a ‘Win-Win’

A healthy, content baby, milk rolling down her chin.

My Milk must be special, it’s too obvious to miss,

The look on her face, of such satisfied bliss.

So never underestimate just what your milk can do,

It’s gifts will last a lifetime, both for baby and for you.

And don’t doubt that you can do it, even if being a mum is new,

Cos here’s a little secret … Your milk is magic too!

More Than Milk.

Standard

More Than Milk.

Breastfeeding is so much more than milk,

Warm and sweet and flowing like silk.

Each drop is pure, love wrapped up in a hug,

So whether human, calf, kitten or cub,

Every baby needs to feed from it’s mother,

And she, in turn, needs them like no other.

~~~
It’s more than convenient, free and delicious.
It’s adaptive, protective and uniquely nutritious.
It’s more than ingredients in a list.
The truth is ‘not breastfeeding’ carries a risk!
The intricate secrets of our own liquid gold,
Are only just beginning to truly unfold.
~~~

It’s more than just some fancy words.

It’s more than the ‘benefits’ that you’ve heard.

It’s got Human Growth Hormone and IQ enhancers,

Super stem cells and cells that fight cancer.

But it’s ALL and so much more than these,

It’s a mothers love; given freely and taken with ease.

~~~
It’s not just about hunger or about thirst,
For a soul is fed too when a baby is nursed.
Within this act of instinctual, maternal emotion,
Is an expression of love, of trust and devotion.
All babies are born expecting their comfort and rest,
Be found in mother’s arms and at mother’s breast.
~~~

It’s more than we know and more than we think.

Breastmilk’s not just a food, it’s not only a drink.

It’s the building blocks of life that’s new.

It’s a bond, a connection, it’s relationship glue.

It’s the power to heal a hurt or a tantrum to tame.

The power to calm the mind and soothe away pain.

~~~
Breastfeeding is so much more than the sum of its parts,
 It will nurture and nourish you both and tug at your hearts.
You Know You’re Nursing a Toddler When…
Standard
You know you’re nursing a toddler when…
your heart’s so full of joy,
as you watch your nursling, once a baby,
grow into a little girl or boy.
You know you’re nursing a toddler when
you’re feeding them in bed,
but they’re upside down, their bums in the place,
where really you’d like their head.
You know you’re nursing a toddler when
there’s barely room on your lap,
for your big, brave explorer who’s not too big
for a nurse before his nap.
You know you’re nursing a toddler when
her hair’s full of ribbons and bows,
but your sweet little angel likes to nurse,
with her finger stuck up your nose.
You know you’re nursing a toddler when
they twist and squirm and wriggle,
which wouldn’t be so bad I suppose,
if they’d only let go of your nipple.
You know you’re nursing a toddler when
feeding time means new dangers.
The toes heading for your face these days,
are wrapped in flashing trainers.
You know you’re nursing a toddler when
there are times you’d rather not.
Perhaps you’re too busy or you’re in a new dress,
and your kid’s all covered in snot.
You know you’re nursing a toddler when
they want to be just like mum.
Hungry toys and dolls get clutched to their chests,
and im just talking about my son!
You know you’re nursing a toddler when
they’re dressed up to make you scream,
but little monsters need nursed too,
even though it’s not Hallowe’en.
You know you’re nursing a toddler when
teddy must have a boob too,
and if they’re feeling particularly generous,
you’ll have to nurse the whole darn zoo.
You know you’re nursing a toddler when
they think you’re the greatest because,
their mummy’s milk is the most delicious.
I once got a round of applause.
You know you’re nursing a toddler when
they’re asleep you say hurrah,
you grab your pyjamas, take of your top,
and lego falls out of your bra.
So to all you mamas nursing toddlers,
remember one day they will be done,
and you can partly thank your marvelous  milk,
for the great grown-up they’ll surely become.
Boobs
Standard
‘Boobs’.. it’s safe
to say can be quite controversial,
they’re extremely sought after to sell anything
commercial, but used how biology and nature intended,
they can cause such a fuss that the uptight get offended.  So why is there
such an almighty uproar when a mum lifts her shirt to feed a baby outdoors?
If a man and his lawnmower can take the same action without fear of reprisal
reprimand or reaction? The world now it seems has become so very unjust to the
beauty and power of the female bust. Their dual functionality,  both fetish and food
has let them become rather terribly misunderstood. We need change to begin with
everyone realizing, that ALL humans have boobs it’s just a matter of sizing.
Lets hope in the future it won’t be an issue, that folks will be equal
with no thought of breast tissue.  I’ll finish with what my
nursling would say if she could, which i’m assuming
of course is.. ‘HURRAY for BOOBS!
An Edible Pact
Standard
An Edible Pact.
Breastfeeding is normal, nature designed babies to eat,
Curled up at our breasts, listening to our hearts beat.
And the magic in this loving and wondrous act,
is a bond so incredible, an edible pact.
(.)(.)
We’ve captured its beauty in all manner of ways
We’ve posed for oil paintings, for sculptures, for days,
From cave drawings to pyramids, babes from all times and places,
Are shown just where they should be with boobs in their faces!
(.)(.)
Today breastfeeding is celebrated by those who can and who choose,
To feed their own babies, (how did that make the news?)
We take precious photos, upload to blogs or to twitter,
But if we share them on Facebook, we’re left feeling bitter.
(.)(.)
Facebook have shunned them. Their beauty forbidden,
Their twisted policy states that our nipples be hidden.
“Breastfeeding’s permitted” it concedes but what’s written
Leaves mothers nursing their wounds without having been bitten.
(.)(.)
Breastfeeding is normal, its just what we do.
So keep sharing your pictures and I’ll take some too,
Until boobs feeding babies is so common a sight,
That no-one will notice and all will be right.
Breastfeeding Myths
Standard
For my friend and inspiration Anne at Dispelling Breastfeeding Myths.
Breastfeeding Myths
Breasts have fed babies since time immemorial,
but some modern advice has gotten simply deplorable,
Lets look at these myths with the aim of dispelling
the half-truths and fiction from the stuff that’s worth telling.
(.)(.)
First off, anatomically for you to succeed,
you’ll need nipples like sign posts and cups; double D’s.
Its nonsense of course, you needn’t win any prizes,
boobs that feed babies come in all shapes and sizes.
(.)(.)
Isn’t Breastfeeding painful? It’s more than an itch.
I knew someone who tried it said it hurt like a b*%ch!
Nursing shouldn’t be painful, nor cause you to yelp!
Most women find comfort when they get the right help.
(.)(.)
Your baby’s too skinny, your milk’s not enough,
to fatten them up I hear formula’s good stuff.
Ladies trust your own bodies, its demand and supply,
before grabbing that bottle there’s so much to try.
(.)(.)
Well what if you’re out and your baby needs fed?
Breastfeeding’s not decent! Bring a bottle instead.
Breastfeeding is beautiful, not indecent or lewd,
you can feed baby anywhere, after all it’s just food.
(.)(.)
But you’ll have to stop anyway if you ever get ill,
your baby could catch it and you’re not allowed  pills!
You’ll find many safe meds and breast milk’s so clever,
Baby get antibodies when you’re under the weather.
(.)(.)
Aren’t bottles just easier ’cos that’s what I’ve heard?
All her babies loved them, it’s what they preferred!
With strange nipples and teats babes’ confusion can hurt,
But what’s more convenient than unbuttoning your shirt?
(.)(.)
I hope now it’s clear there’s no wisdom in rumour.
Old wives and their tales can tell little but humour.
 So what will you need to feed your little creation?
Support…. more support and the right information!!
